Gross Motor Activities for 12-Month-Old — 7 Ideas Parents Love

|Poco Koko Team

Welcome to the walking era. At twelve months, many babies are taking their first wobbly independent steps — arms held high for balance, feet wide apart, each step a small act of bravery. Some twelve-month-olds are still perfecting their cruising, and that is completely normal. Whether your baby is stepping solo or still holding on, these activities build the strength and balance that turn lurching into real walking.

7 Gross Motor Activities for 12-Month-Olds

  1. Wagon push walking. Let your baby push a small, sturdy wagon loaded with books for weight — the resistance slows them down and provides forward stability, making each step more controlled than free walking.

  2. Deliver the toy. Stand a few feet away and ask your baby to bring you a stuffed animal — walking with a purpose (carrying something to someone) is more motivating than walking for its own sake and builds functional balance.

  3. Stand-up painting. Tape a large sheet of paper to the wall at your baby's standing height and hand them a chunky crayon — they will stand, reach, and shift weight side to side as they scribble, building balance without thinking about it.

  4. Blanket tug of war. Sit on the floor, hold one end of a small blanket, and let your baby pull the other end while standing — the resistance challenges their balance in a backward direction they rarely practice.

  5. Low step-up practice. Find a single low step or place a sturdy board on top of a flat book — hold your baby's hand as they practice stepping up and down, which teaches deliberate foot placement and single-leg balance.

  6. Walking between parents. Sit on the floor facing your partner about four feet apart and let your baby walk back and forth between you — the short distance is achievable, and the social reward at each end keeps them going.

  7. Stooping to pick up. Scatter soft toys around the floor and ask your baby to pick them up one at a time while standing — bending to the floor and standing back up builds deep knee and core strength.

Safety Note

New walkers fall constantly, and they tend to hit their heads because they have not yet learned to put their hands out to catch themselves. Keep floors clear, pad sharp corners, and supervise all walking play closely.
