Music Activities for 9 Month Old — 6 Ideas Parents Love

How Your 9 Month Old Responds to Music

At nine months, your baby starts to move their whole body to music. You may see them bounce up and down on their bottom, rock side to side, or wave their arms overhead when an upbeat song comes on. They are beginning to connect specific songs with specific actions — hearing "Itsy Bitsy Spider" may trigger hand movements even before you start the gestures. Imitation is sharper now, and they can repeat a simple action like shaking a maraca after watching you do it once.

These floor-based activities channel your baby's full-body musical response.

6 Music Activities to Try Today

  1. Seated dance party. Put on an upbeat song and sit on the mat facing your baby. Bounce, sway, and wave your arms — your baby will mirror your movements with their own version of dancing. Change the music style mid-song to see how their movement changes.

  2. Maraca shake-off. Give your baby a lightweight maraca in one hand and hold one yourself. Shake together during the music and stop when it pauses. Your baby will begin to anticipate the stop, holding the maraca still for a beat before shaking resumes.

  3. Drum and crawl. Place a drum or overturned container on one side of the mat. Play a few beats, then stop. Your baby may crawl toward the drum to make more sound — turning music into a movement motivator.

  4. Action song routine. Sing "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" while touching each body part on your baby. After several repetitions, your baby may reach for their own head or toes when they hear the word — connecting language, music, and body awareness.

  5. Jingle sock play. Sew or securely attach a small jingle bell inside a baby sock and place it on your baby's foot. Every kick makes music, which encourages more kicking and builds the connection between movement and sound.

  6. Rhythm crawl tunnel. Set up a soft play tunnel on the mat and tap a beat on the outside as your baby crawls through. The sound surrounds them, creating an immersive rhythm experience that is also great for gross motor development.

Safety Note

Jingle bells must be securely enclosed inside fabric — never use loose bells around babies. Maracas should be one-piece construction with no removable parts. Check play tunnels for stability before each use.

Best Surface for These Activities

Nine-month-olds are crawling confidently and pulling to stand, which means their music play happens across a wide area. A memory foam play mat gives them a safe zone for dancing, crawling, and the inevitable sit-down landings that come with energetic movement.
