What Fine Motor Skills Look Like at 6 Months
At six months, your baby is discovering their hands in a whole new way. You will notice them using a raking grasp — sweeping small objects toward themselves with all four fingers instead of picking things up precisely. They are also starting to transfer objects from one hand to the other, which is a major coordination milestone. These skills are the foundation for everything from self-feeding to writing, and the best way to encourage them is simple floor play.
6 Fine Motor Activities for Your 6 Month Old
-
Ribbon Pull Basket — Tie short fabric ribbons (no longer than 6 inches) to a lightweight basket and let your baby rake at them and pull them free, strengthening their grasp reflex.
-
Two-Toy Transfer Game — Hand your baby a soft block, then offer a second one to the same hand so they are motivated to transfer the first block to their other hand before grabbing the new one.
-
Crinkle Fabric Exploration — Place a crinkle-sound fabric square on the mat in front of your baby during tummy time and let them rake, grab, and scrunch it with both hands.
-
Silicone Teether Reach — Lay two or three different textured silicone teethers just within arm's reach so your baby has to stretch and rake them closer, practicing that open-palm grasp.
-
Wet Washcloth Squeeze — Give your baby a damp (not dripping) washcloth on the mat and watch them grip, squeeze, and transfer it between hands — great sensory input and grasp practice combined.
-
Stacking Cup Knock-Down — Build a small tower of two or three lightweight stacking cups near your baby and encourage them to swipe and rake the tower down, reinforcing cause-and-effect alongside hand movement.
Safety Note
Always supervise floor play closely at this age. Keep objects larger than a toilet paper roll to prevent choking, and avoid anything with small detachable parts. Ribbons should be short enough that they cannot wrap around fingers or neck.
Best Surface for 6 Month Old Activities
A firm, cushioned play mat gives your baby the stable surface they need for tummy time reaching and sitting practice. Memory foam mats absorb the inevitable face-plants without being so soft that they interfere with motor development.
