Gross Motor Activities for 11-Month-Old — 7 Ideas Parents Love

|Poco Koko Team

Eleven months is the doorstep of walking. Your baby can probably stand alone for several seconds, cruise at speed, and may even take a lurching step or two between pieces of furniture before dropping to a crawl. Their balance system is maturing rapidly, and they are figuring out how to shift weight from one foot to the other. These activities strengthen those final pre-walking skills so the big milestone feels less like a leap and more like a natural next step.

7 Gross Motor Activities for 11-Month-Olds

  1. Furniture island hopping. Space three or four stable furniture pieces in a wide circle, each about two steps apart — your baby will cruise to the edge of one, assess the gap, and either bridge it or take an independent step to the next.

  2. Push toy walking. Give your baby a weighted push walker on a flat surface and let them grip the handle and walk forward — the resistance keeps them from going too fast and builds controlled stepping.

  3. Standing ball drop. Place a container on the floor next to your baby while they stand — ask them to drop balls or blocks into it one at a time, which forces them to balance, bend, and recover repeatedly.

  4. Climb and slide on cushions. Stack two or three couch cushions into a small ramp and let your baby climb up and slide or tumble down — this teaches them to navigate height changes and coordinate their whole body.

  5. Parent tunnel crawl. Get on all fours and let your baby crawl underneath you, then rise to stand using your body as support — this combines crawling with pulling-to-stand in one seamless circuit.

  6. One-hand cruising. Encourage your baby to carry a small toy in one hand while cruising the furniture with the other — reducing their support from two hands to one accelerates balance development.

  7. Stepping over a pool noodle. Lay a pool noodle on the floor and hold your baby's hands as they step over it — this deliberate foot-lifting motion teaches weight transfer to one leg at a time, a fundamental walking skill.

Safety Note

Pre-walkers tend to launch themselves forward without checking where they are going. Keep pathways clear of hard or sharp objects, and pad any furniture corners at head height with corner guards.

Best Surface for 11-Month-Old Motor Play

Every tentative solo step at this age ends with a fall — usually forward onto hands and knees or backward onto their bottom and head. A memory foam play mat gives your baby a forgiving landing surface that encourages them to try again rather than cry. Shop Poco Koko play mats →
