Gross Motor Activities for 18-Month-Old — 6 Ideas Parents Love

|Poco Koko Team

At eighteen months, your toddler is a full-time mover. Running is their default speed, climbing stairs with a hand on the wall is becoming routine, and they may be attempting to jump with both feet (usually one foot leaves the ground while the other stays planted). They are also starting to throw balls overhand, climb playground ladders, and navigate uneven outdoor terrain. This is the age where gross motor play starts looking like actual athletics in miniature.

6 Gross Motor Activities for 18-Month-Olds

  1. Overhand ball throw. Stand a few feet away from your toddler and have them throw a soft ball to you overhand — the reaching-back and releasing motion builds shoulder strength, trunk rotation, and hand-eye coordination.

  2. Running stop-and-go. Call out "go" and "stop" while your toddler runs in an open space — learning to brake on command teaches deceleration control, which is one of the hardest running skills for toddlers to master.

  3. Climbing playground structure. Take your toddler to a playground with age-appropriate climbing equipment and stay close while they climb ladders, walk across platforms, and navigate slides — real playground structures offer challenges that cannot be replicated indoors.

  4. Two-foot jump practice. Hold your toddler's hands and count "one, two, three, jump" while you both bend your knees and spring up — even if they barely leave the ground, the bending-and-pushing motion teaches the jumping pattern.

  5. Walking up stairs independently. If your toddler is ready, let them walk up stairs holding the railing without your hand — stay one step behind with arms ready, and let them practice the independence while you provide the safety net.

  6. Kicking a ball back and forth. Stand about six feet apart and kick a soft ball to your toddler, then let them kick it back — at eighteen months, they can usually make contact with intent, and the back-and-forth pattern adds a social and cognitive layer to the motor skill.

Safety Note

Eighteen-month-olds are fast, fearless, and physically capable enough to get into genuinely dangerous situations. They can push chairs to counters, open doors, and climb out of cribs. A daily safety scan of your home is essential at this stage.
