Gross Motor Activities for 24-Month-Old — 6 Ideas Parents Love

|Poco Koko Team

At twenty-four months, your toddler is running with real coordination, jumping with both feet leaving the ground, kicking balls with direction, and climbing everything in sight. They can walk up and down stairs with a railing, navigate uneven outdoor terrain, and may even pedal a tricycle. Their body is strong and capable, and the challenge now is providing activities that refine coordination, build endurance, and introduce new movement patterns rather than just speed and strength.

6 Gross Motor Activities for 24-Month-Olds

  1. Obstacle course with instructions. Build a course — crawl under a table, jump over a pool noodle, walk along a tape line, throw a ball into a basket — and guide your toddler through it in order. At two, they can follow a multi-step physical sequence, which combines motor skills with listening and memory.

  2. Jumping off a low step. Let your toddler stand on a low step or sturdy box (six inches or less) and jump off with both feet — landing on a mat teaches them to bend their knees on impact and builds genuine jumping ability.

  3. Kicking to a target. Set up two cones or shoes as a "goal" and have your toddler kick a ball between them from a few feet away — aiming while kicking demands balance, leg control, and spatial awareness simultaneously.

  4. Tricycle or balance bike. Introduce a low balance bike or tricycle and let your toddler practice in a safe, flat area — pedaling or scooting builds bilateral leg coordination and teaches steering, which is a new type of gross motor challenge.

  5. Simon says (movement version). Play a simplified version where you call out movements — "Simon says touch your toes," "Simon says jump," "Simon says spin around" — your two-year-old can follow these commands, and the game builds body awareness, listening, and motor planning.

  6. Throwing at a target. Hang a hula hoop from a doorway or hold a laundry basket at your toddler's chest height and have them throw soft balls through or into it — aimed throwing requires coordinating force, direction, and timing, a big step up from random throwing.

Safety Note

Two-year-olds are capable enough to attempt genuinely risky physical feats — jumping from heights, climbing tall structures, running near streets. Their judgment does not match their physical ability. Constant outdoor supervision and secure barriers around hazards are non-negotiable.
