Seven months is when things start moving — literally. Most 7-month-olds can sit independently for longer stretches, and many are beginning to belly-crawl (commando-style, dragging with their arms). Some are getting up on hands-and-knees and making tentative forward movements. They're also getting better at transitioning between positions — rolling to sitting, sitting to tummy. These activities channel all that new mobility into purposeful movement.
7 Gross Motor Activities for 7-Month-Olds
-
Belly-crawl obstacle course. Lay a rolled-up towel or flat pillow on the floor and place a favorite toy on the other side — your baby will army-crawl over it, building upper-body strength and teaching them to navigate uneven surfaces.
-
Sit-to-reach tower knock. Stack three soft blocks in front of your seated baby, just far enough that they need to lean forward to swat them down — this controlled forward lean builds core stability and teaches them to recover balance.
-
Two-toy transfer. Hand your baby a toy in each hand while they're sitting, then offer a third — this forces them to problem-solve (drop one? set one down?) while maintaining balance, combining cognitive and motor skills simultaneously.
-
Supported standing at the couch. Hold your baby upright with their hands resting on a couch cushion and let them bear weight through their legs for 30–60 seconds — this early weight-bearing strengthens the quads, ankles, and feet for future pulling-to-stand.
-
Chase the rolling ball. Sit a few feet from your baby and slowly roll a ball past them so they have to pivot, lean, or belly-crawl to grab it — tracking and pursuing a moving object builds coordination between their eyes and body.
-
Tummy time on your shins. Lie on your back with knees bent and place your baby tummy-down on your shins, holding their hands — gently rock your legs to shift their weight forward and back, which strengthens their extension reflexes and back muscles.
-
Pull-to-sit from lying down. With your baby on their back, offer your index fingers and let them grip and pull themselves up to sitting — resist slightly so they do real work, building arm and abdominal strength with each rep.
Safety Note
Belly-crawlers move faster than you expect. Clear the floor of small objects, cover outlets, and secure furniture that could tip. Always supervise standing practice — babies at this age will let go without warning.
Best Surface for 7-Month-Old Motor Play
A baby learning to belly-crawl needs a floor that's smooth enough to slide across but cushioned enough to protect elbows and knees from friction. Memory foam play mats provide the ideal balance — soft on joints, firm enough for pushing off, and easy to wipe when drool happens. Shop Poco Koko play mats →
