Sensory Play for 4-Month-Old — 6 Ideas Parents Love

|Poco Koko Team

Four months is when things start getting interactive. Your baby can now hold their head steady during tummy time, grasp objects placed in their hand, and bring things straight to their mouth for investigation. Sensory play at this stage should take advantage of their new grip strength and their intense desire to mouth, shake, and feel everything within reach.

6 Sensory Activities for 4-Month-Olds

  1. Rattle shake and listen. Place a lightweight rattle in your baby's hand and let them discover cause and effect — at four months, they are learning that their movements create sound, and the surprise keeps them shaking.

  2. Cool teething ring on gums. Offer a refrigerated (not frozen) silicone teething ring during floor play — the cool temperature introduces a new sensation and soothes gums that may be starting to feel early teething pressure.

  3. Water splash tray. Set a shallow tray with a thin layer of lukewarm water in front of your baby during supported tummy time — when their fingers hit the water, the splash and wetness are completely new sensory inputs.

  4. Soft ball rolling. Roll a textured fabric ball slowly toward your baby while they are on their tummy — they will track it with their eyes and may attempt to reach forward, building coordination.

  5. Silk scarf peek-a-boo. Drape a lightweight silk scarf gently over your baby's face and let them pull it off — the brief visual change followed by your smiling face introduces early object permanence concepts.

  6. Musical tummy time. Play different genres of music softly while your baby is on the floor and observe how they react — four-month-olds begin showing preferences, turning toward sounds they enjoy.

Safety Note

Four-month-olds mouth everything. Ensure all objects are too large to be a choking hazard, free of small detachable parts, and made from non-toxic materials. Never leave water trays unattended.

Best Surface for Sensory Play

As your baby spends more active time on the floor, a cushioned play mat protects them during the inevitable face-plants that come with building upper body strength. Poco Koko play rugs absorb impact without being so soft that they hinder motor development. Shop our play mat collection for a safe, easy-to-clean surface.
