Your Baby at Week 3: Development Milestones & Play Ideas

|Poco Koko Team

Your baby is 3 weeks old — those fleeting alert moments are becoming a little longer, and you may catch your first glimpse of real engagement.

What's Happening This Week

Physically, your baby is getting stronger in small but important ways. During tummy time, they may lift their head just enough to turn it from one side to the other. Their movements are still mostly reflexive, but you might notice moments where they seem more purposeful — a hand brought near the mouth, legs pushing against a surface. The stepping reflex is still present if you hold your baby upright with their feet touching a flat surface, though this will fade in the coming weeks.

Vision is developing rapidly this week. Your baby is beginning to track objects that move slowly across their field of vision, especially high-contrast items. They will not follow smoothly yet — it is more of a jerky, stop-and-start tracking — but it is a significant step forward. They continue to prefer faces above all else and may stare at you intently during quiet alert moments. Their hearing is also sharpening. You may notice your baby pausing their movements when they hear a new sound, or turning slightly toward your voice when you speak from across the room.

Socially, your baby is becoming more responsive to your presence. They may quiet down when picked up, recognize the sound of your voice, and show brief moments of focused attention. Crying patterns are often increasing around this time — this is normal and does not mean anything is wrong. Feeding and sleep remain frequent and somewhat unpredictable, but you may start to notice the tiniest hints of a pattern emerging in when your baby is most alert versus most sleepy.

Play Ideas for Week 3

  • Slow object tracking: Hold a high-contrast toy or card about 10 to 12 inches from your baby's face and move it slowly from side to side. Watch their eyes — they may begin to follow it in short bursts.
  • Tummy time progression: Try tummy time on a flat surface with a small rolled towel under the chest for support. Keep it to two to three minutes, and get down at their level so they can see your face.
  • Different textures: Gently stroke your baby's arms, legs, and feet with different fabrics — a soft cloth, a slightly textured blanket. This stimulates their sense of touch.
  • Mirror play: Hold a small, unbreakable mirror near your baby's face during alert moments. They cannot recognize themselves yet, but faces — even their own — are endlessly fascinating.

What You Need

As tummy time sessions start to lengthen slightly, a good mat becomes more important. Look for one with enough cushion to keep your baby comfortable during those extra minutes on their belly. Our tummy time mats are designed with exactly this stage in mind — find the right fit at /collections/tummy-time-mats.

When to Talk to Your Pediatrician

Reach out if your baby does not seem to respond to loud sounds, never seems to focus on your face when held close, or if feeding continues to be a significant struggle. Also mention any concerns about your own recovery or mental health — your wellbeing matters just as much.

FAQ

Is it normal for my 3-week-old to be more fussy than before?
Yes. Many babies hit a fussier period starting around three weeks. They are more alert and more stimulated by the world, which can be overwhelming for their developing nervous system. This is a normal developmental phase.

How long should tummy time be at 3 weeks?
Aim for two to three minutes at a time, several times per day. You can split it across floor time and chest-to-chest time. If your baby gets upset, it is fine to stop and try again later.
